There are 3 workshops taking place as part of the PGR development programme – 25th November 2010, 17th February 2011 and 19th April 2011.

During the Intensive SAgE Solvers workshop on 25th November 2010, PGRs will have the opportunity to hear Visiting Professor Will Dracup’s success story and to be set a real life problem by him. In a fast moving and extremely productive session, many transferrable skills and much relevant knowledge will be introduced and intensively used, as workshop participants work in teams to generate solutions, develop a plan for commercialisation and present and pitch their idea clearly and convincingly.

Will Dracup is the founder and Chairman of three companies, Biosignatures, Nonlinear Dynamics and TotalLab. An Economics graduate and software engineer, he founded Nonlinear in 1989. Biosignatures is a highly innovative software based diagnostics company generating novel diagnostic signatures. Nonlinear Dynamics and TotalLab have sold to over 8,500 users worldwide. Customers include all of the top 20 pharmaceutical organisations and research universities world-wide. In November 2009, Will received the North East Executive of the Year award for Tyne & Wear and Northumberland. He is currently the Goldman Visiting Professor of Business Innovation at Newcastle University, and Visiting Professor of Human Proteomics at Sunderland University.

On 17th February 2011, the entrepreneurial Prof will be Max Robinson, a highly respected academic, pioneer, inventor and visionary in the field of 3D X-ray imaging. He has been involved in the management of the interface between academic research and commercialisation of its findings for over 25 years.

In 2003, Max formed a spin out venture from the University of Durham’s Physics Department – Kromek, formerly Durham Scientific Crystals, to commercialise technology which had been developed in the Physics Department over a period of 20 years. Kromek is pioneering digital colour imaging for x-rays and has brought ground-breaking innovation to materials technology and advanced 3D imaging. This includes significant applications in medical imaging, security screening, industrial inspection and space exploration, allowing for very precise identification of materials. The company now has over 30 employees, nine of whom have PhDs. It holds multiple contracts, has raised in excess of £8million to develop its current product range and has won international awards.
